General HealthHealthHealth IntroductionHealth is one of the most broadest descriptive terms in the human language. The greeting "How are you?" is both social nice and direct. It refers of course to our overall health and whether we have any concern pressing on us. The answer to such a health question depends very much on the relationship closeness to the person asking and being asked. Even to a doctors receptionist, we will often reply "fine", even though we may be half dead and coughing and splattering all over the place. If a loved one might ask the same health question, we may go into extraordinary detail about how bad we are really feeling - even to the color and frequency of the phlegm we may be coughing up. As humans, we learn the social graces and the level of communication required, based on who is asking us and our relationship with them at the time.
What Does the Health Question "How are you?" really meanThe health question is extremely vague from a human perspective, yet we all seem to know how to answer it appropriately. The vagueness of the health question is what gives it so much strength. It is just open to being answered in so many ways. So what is health? Most people immediately think physical health - Am I feeling healthy or sick. Yet it also often refers to emotional health, mental health, and spiritual health. Another rung in this "What is health?" question, relates to other issues that may be immediately concerning us. The example of financial concerns immediately jumps to mind. In other words our financial health. At this rung we might also mention relationship health, such as "My wife left me this morning" The distant concerns to us, can also be referred to in health terms as well. Such as as "How healthy is the planet?" "The earth is really getting sick with pollution", "Yeah, climate change is getting bad", "The end times are coming". So you see, the question "What is health?", is quite broad. If I were to try and define health in the light of the above, I would define health as being "Anything that worries us", when referenced to the question "How are you?". If we reference health to another term or question, our definition of health then changes accordingly. I don't believe there is one definition of health that can apply to every way we may use it. Humans are too complex, too able to alter our emotional association areas to incorporate other things that may interest us / concern us at any point in time.
Will computers or robots be able to understand health? This health question is one of the most difficult questions to answer. According to evolutionists, the answer will be yes, we just have to throw enough time into the equation - lets not forget the amount of human programming and so on as well over that time. However, my personal feeling is that robots and computers wont really understand the health question "How are you", because they would require a program to give them a list of concerns and requires the robot to have feelings about the things it has been told to be concerned about. Our scientists may achieve robots that give the appearance of being health aware, of being able to answer "How are you?" But if that is all that is achieved, an appearance of feeling and emotion, an appearance of understanding health, then the scientists have failed.
The basic flaw of robots and why health issues are beyond themFor several decades university and even high school students studying psychology - emotional health essentially - have been over run with the weltanschauung of Skinner. Skinner argued that people were totally predictable, provided you knew every experience that molded them - free will was just a myth - we were nothing more than machines. This philosophy of life permeated the thinking of westerners - and computer programmers. The problem with Skinner's philosophy, is that it can not be disproved, which is why it caught on so well. If an individual acts unpredictably, it's because some of the variables aren't fully known. Anyway, to move back to our health question, the thought that man is totally predictable and lacking free will, means that his health is totally predictable as well, provided we know all the variables. So computer programmers and robotic engineers are working on the belief that they can build a superior, more healthy being to a human, one that wont die, become unhealthy ... just need to maybe replace the odd part every few hundred years or so - a being in essentially perfect health. Although it is undoubtedly true that they will probably produce such a healthy being, the problem is that the thinking feeling rationale that humans are infinitely predictable without free will, is not proven, it is just a philosophy. Apart from that, these geniuses are trying to create a perfect being out of metal, plastic and silicone, trying to replicate a human made out of living tissue that constantly dies and reproduces - a being whose greatest elemental make up is water. (This is akin to stone age people building giant statues and believing they were in some essence alive, directly connected to the Gods of far superior health, and that you can make offerings and appease the Gods by laying gifts and sacrifices at or to the statues, who will bless you then with greater health in some way) Yet these guys assume they can duplicate us better in nonliving, non water based materials - that humans are flawed with a multitude of health issues, that their robots and computers don't need to be burdened with. Another side of this, is that also believe that human thought and emotion, which is linked to the electro-chemical way we store and interpret information, can be duplicated by electrical current and silicone chips. That our thinking is able to be programmed in pure yes / no routines and subroutines and so on and so on. By now you should be able to see the point I am making, they are trying to create robots of prefect health, that are better than us, but they are trying to make them out of materials that are not similar to the makeup of any human or living creature, and that they believe - hold the philosophy - that human thinking is completely predictable and can be written into yes/no computer code. According to my thinking, their thinking is quite narrow and limited, and I see their philosophy and perceptions of us humans as quite flawed and limited. That's my healthy or unhealthy perception anyway.
The health of cyborgsAnother adjunct to this whole robotic perfect health kick, is the idea that we can improve man to limitless life, by just replacing living tissue with metal and plastic and batteries as the need arises. Obviously we can do that a bit already, but the more pertinent health issue is that people believe in the six million dollar man and the bionic woman, particularly the younger generations that are growing in such a fervent climate of health improvements. Consider this, I replace my legs and feet with mechanical cyborg ones that have super human strength and ability. When I use it, it is exerting pressure and forces on my bones that it connects to. Fact is, if I jumped off a tall building, the legs may be still standing but the spine would be in a heap, and all the jarring forces would be damaging all the bones - not a very healthy thing to happen, because I wanted super human powers. Dental health is also a prime example of what can happen. Anyone who has a crown on one of their teeth, has normally had their crown made out of an exceptionally hard material - one that is much harder than teeth. The idea is that the crown, being stronger than a tooth, will protected the unhealthy tooth it covers much better. Ever wondered how this little cyborg implant goes? Well, after a while the teeth are normally worn down a bit from eating, so the crown that was made to perfectly fit the bite, now sits proud of the other teeth around it. Yes the bite has become unhealthy and may lead to pain and suffering, but more to the point, because it was made to be superior to teeth, the opposing teeth that it chews against then are cracked and destroyed by the crown! Perfectly healthy teeth are destroyed by the implant. For good health of teeth, you should use a softer material than a normal tooth, and replace it as it gets worn out. Good dental health doesn't come from superior harder materials, but from softer, more easily destroyed materials.
The idea that Robots or computers may use living tissue in their construction to augment their own health and abilities.Well, if they do that, they have accepted failure - the machine only lasts as long as the living tissue does. If they could make living tissue immortal - totally healthy - so would we be.
Health in conclusionIf you answer the health question "How are you?", then I reckon your miles healthier than the perfect health robot that will ever exist.
